YA ALLAH [SWT]
O Turner of the heart, make my heart
firm upon your deen.
Ya Allah !
Be with me in my silent battles.
Ya Allah!
Be with me in my darkest nights.
Ya Allah!
Be with me in my saddest day.
Ya Allah!
Be with me in my toughest time.
Ya Allah!
Be with me in my loneliness.
Ya Allah!
Be with me in my weakest position.
Allahumma inni as'aluka 'Ilman naafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan
O Allah, I ask you for knowledge that is of benefit, a good provision and deeds that will be accepted.
[Ibn Majah and others]
In this dua, we ask Allah for three things;
As students of Quran, we continuously struggle to gain knowledge, revising for long hours, juggling house duties, shopping, cleaning, travelling to classes, the sacrifice of our time including the inner battle with our nafs. After all this struggle, what we want is knowledge that will be beneficial to our lives. It would be a waste of time, energy and effort if, after all the studying and long hours it does not benefit us.
There are some who do not benefit. This could be someone who studies just for the sake of it. There may be some who will study and learn just because it is popular to do so, or they don’t have anything else to do. They may study a subject but never use the knowledge. If they are not applying and putting into practice what they have studied, then there is no benefit, they gain no change in their life, or actions, deeds, or in dealing with others.
True knowledge
It could also be that their learning is self-satisfying meaning, they are only focused on seeking knowledge for themselves. We want the knowledge not just to benefit ourselves but also everyone around us. In our homes, neighbourhood, at work, even if it's someone we meet just once. The knowledge we gain must be shared with others in order for there to be any kind of true benefit. True knowledge is the knowledge that has been attained and then used, whether it be for the Dunya or the deen. When you say this dua, make the intention to benefit humanity through whatever you are learning.
In this dua, we also ask for good provisions. We should use our knowledge to seek provisions that are tayyib, pure, good and lawful. If your provisions are not halal, then how will your actions be? If your money is haram then your duas will not be accepted, your worship is not accepted, which will affect your character, your abilities and then this becomes a barrier to any beneficial knowledge, so always make dua for pure and halal provisions. We should make sure we learn all the conditions for making dua in order for them to be accepted. I highly recommend the book, Du'a Weapon of the Believer if you are serious about your duas and want to get the most out of them.
“So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord” [al-Kahf 18:110]
There are two main conditions that all believers must apply in order for their deeds to be accepted:
After studying hard and gaining the knowledge the next step is to implement what we have learned. We want our actions to be accepted otherwise there is no benefit.
Imagine doing your assignment, we hand it in and the teacher says no and rejects it. When taking our assignments and tests, we have to follow certain conditions; Name at the top of the test paper with the date, only use a blue pen etc. If these instructions are not met the test is not accepted. Just like there are rules that we have to follow throughout our lives, and if we don’t then there are consequences.
ALLAH [SWT] is the best Listener. You don't need to shout nor cry out loud because He hears even the very silent prayer of a sincere heart.
when you can't put your prayers into words,
ALLAH [SWT] hears your heart.
Assalamualaikum, today I will share a dua with you that will relieve you in times of distress. It’s a short and simple dua which you can memorize in just a few minutes.
It was sufficient for Prophet Yunus (may peace be upon him) when he was trapped in the darkness alone in the belly of a whale. In the Quran it says that because he recited this Dua he was relieved of this burden.
Prophet Yunus Dua
In Arabic:
لَّآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّآ أَنتَ سُبْحَٰنَكَ إِنِّى كُنتُ مِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ
The full ayah goes as follows:
“And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, “There is no deity except You; exalted, are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” it continues on, “So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.”
If you’re familiar with the story of Prophet Yunus you’ll know that Prophet Yunus gave up on his people. Without the permission of Allah, he decided to leave the city of Nineveh in hopes to find a city that would more readily accept him and the message of Islam. This is why the Quran mentions “the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him”.
As punishment he was kicked off and abandoned by his ship members, swallowed by a whale, and left in darkness. At this moment he cried out remembering Allah, praising Allah, admitting his faults in the matter by saying “Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.”
Allah seeing the genuine and sincere apology had then relieve him.
Significance of La Ilaha Illa Anta Subhanaka
This short dua also encompasses the concept of tawheed, one of the most basic tenets of Islam. By saying this dua, you are consciously and deliberately declaring that Allah (swt) is the only deity, the exalted. You then show your humility by admitting your faults and weakness.
I forget who had said this, I believe it was Hazrat Ali, but the message is still valid, the worst sin is that which a sinner takes lightly. We should be constantly repenting to Allah (swt) at any moment we are free. We are all guilty of not making the best use of our time, some are better than others but we can all improve. We should all strive to have as little idle time as possible.
This is why we should mix this heavy ayah into our diverse toolbox of duas and azkar.
The best form of dhikr is to recite Quran with an understanding of its meanings.
People often forget the importance of the simple yet powerful dua (supplication) – Istighfar i.e., saying “Astaghfirullah” (I seek forgiveness of Allah). Prophet Muhammad (SallAllahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) recited this at least 100 times a day. Let us see the benefits and virtues of reciting this simple beautiful supplication insha Allah.
Istighfar (Astaghfirullah) is the gateway of relief and happiness. Whenever you are in distress start reciting it and Insha Allah it will take you out of your anxiety and will put you in a peaceful situation and will give you happiness.
Istighfar relieves you. When you feel that sadness within you, when you are disturbed and frustrated, when anxiety surrounds you, say “Astaghfirullah” “Astaghfirullah”…Reciting Astaghfiruallah is an effective method of calming our self and wipes away the variety of worldly worries from our mind and body. It may also help us, if we are suffering from depression, it calms us and lessens our depression.
“If anyone constantly seeks pardon (from Allah), Allah will appoint for him a way out of every distress and a relief from every anxiety, and will provide sustenance for him from where he expects not.” [Abu Dawud].
“The one who (regularly) says Istighfaar, that is, frequently repent to Allah Ta’aala for sins committed, Allah Azza Wa-Jal will open a path from poverty and difficulties. All sorrow and hardship will be removed, and in its place prosperity and contentment granted. One will receive sustenance from unimagined and unexpected sources.”
“The one who seeks forgiveness for Muslim males and females from Allah Ta’aala twenty six or twenty five times every day, Allah Ta’ala will count that person among those whose Du’a is accepted, and through the barakah of whom those on earth gain Rizq (sustenance).”
